Most people who search for a luxury beach resort in Costa Rica are really searching for a feeling: room to hear the water, nobody hurrying them, a day that belongs to them. A long list of amenities rarely delivers that. Fewer people tend to. At Miamar, on Playa Espadilla in Manuel Antonio, there are 14 suites, and nearly everything worth saying about the place follows from that number.

What quiet luxury means at the beach

On a city trip, luxury often means a lobby and a name on the door. At the beach it means something plainer. It is an unclaimed chair at the pool at ten in the morning, a table at breakfast without a wait, a terrace where the only sound is the Pacific. It is also the absence of a schedule: nobody announces the activity of the hour, and nobody asks you to be anywhere.

Scale does most of this work. A property with hundreds of rooms has to manage people, with lines, wristbands and fixed seating times. A property with 14 suites can simply let people be. Quiet is not a feature added to the brochure. It is what is left when there are few guests and plenty of space.

Fourteen suites, and why the number matters

Miamar sits directly on the sand of Playa Espadilla. Past the gardens and a small mangrove, the beach is a short walk. Every suite has a king bed, luxury linens, eco-friendly amenities and a private terrace, and the Wi-Fi is fast enough that you will stop thinking about it.

The Lux Water Channel Suites are on the ground floor, and their terraces open straight onto a curved shared plunge pool. You step out of bed and into the water without crossing a lobby. The Lux Balcony Suites are on the second floor, with an elevated view of the ocean. The Lux Suite is two rooms and sleeps up to four, with a jungle and partial ocean view. A larger pool lies in the tropical gardens, open daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and with 14 suites it does not fill up.

From the terraces you may see scarlet macaws or monkeys crossing the canopy. We mention it because it is true, and because it tells you where you are: the Central Pacific coast, not a resort that could be anywhere.

A concierge who has time for you

Personal service is easy to promise and hard to deliver at scale. With a small number of guests, it becomes ordinary. The concierge at Miamar is available 24 hours, and the requests that come in are practical: a guided walk through Manuel Antonio National Park, a sunset cruise, a private charter, snorkeling, sportfishing out of Marina Pez Vela, a trip to a waterfall. Private airport transfers can be arranged from Quepos La Managua (XQP) or San José (SJO), so the trip starts calmly too. Our guide to things to do in Manuel Antonio covers what they arrange most often.

Because the people at the desk are looking after a handful of suites rather than a full resort, they learn what you drink, when you like to eat, and whether you want the day planned or left alone. That is what we mean by a concierge who knows your name. It is a matter of numbers more than training.

Breakfast at your own pace

Yemaya Restaurant serves a complimentary a la carte breakfast with every stay, from 7:00 to 10:30 AM. There is no buffet line and no rush; you order what you want and stay as long as the coffee holds out. By day the kitchen leans toward light coastal food, including ceviches. At night dinner becomes more refined: seafood, seasonal produce, Mediterranean and Latin influences. Room service is available during restaurant hours, which suits a morning when you would rather stay on the terrace.

For a drink at the end of the day, Oshun Bar is oceanfront, with handcrafted tropical cocktails and premium spirits. Obatalá Terrace & Bar is the open-air spot for sunsets. Drinks are also brought to the pool and the beach. Miamar has no swim-up bar, and that is a deliberate kind of restraint: the water stays quiet.

Rest, without leaving the property

An in-suite massage can be arranged through the concierge, which is about as unhurried as a spa visit gets. If you want a full spa, Pacífica Spa is at Parador Nature Resort & Spa, our sister resort, with a complimentary shuttle between the two properties. Guests can also use Parador's trails, pools, gym, restaurants and bars, so a small hotel does not mean a small world. Complimentary parking at Parador and one vehicle per suite on site make arrival simple if you are driving.

Oceanfront yoga happens on the terrace in the morning and at sunset. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM, which leaves the middle of a day easy to fill with nothing.

Who this suits, and who it may not

Miamar is adults-only; guests must be 18 or older. That choice is part of the calm, and it is covered in more detail in our post on the adults-only resort experience in Costa Rica. It is also not all-inclusive, and there are no pets. If you want a program of activities and a crowd, a larger resort will serve you better. If you are looking at the shoreline more broadly, our guide to Manuel Antonio hotels on the beach compares what staying on the sand actually changes.

The setting suits couples most naturally: honeymoons, anniversaries and vow renewals. If that is your reason for traveling, you may like our notes on a Manuel Antonio honeymoon.

The case, simply put

If you are comparing the best hotels in Manuel Antonio, you will find that many of them can offer a pool, a view and good food. What is harder to find is a place small enough that none of those things is ever crowded. A boutique hotel in Manuel Antonio makes sense when you want to be noticed by the staff and left alone by everyone else. That is the argument for 14 suites, and it is the only one we are making.

If it sounds like your kind of stay, you can see current dates and check availability here, or learn more about the resort on the Miamar home page.
